Fire Hydrants Get a Needed Repaint

A colorful fire hydrant not only adds to the community, but it makes it easier for dogs and firefighters to find – important for both in case of an emergency. To that end, Missouri American Water painted over 1,000 hydrants in St. Louis county. A spokeswoman for the company said that different colors on the hydrants can alert the first responders as to how much water will come from each.

The hydrants were sandblasted, primed in white, and several days later painted to meet the standards of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA)
